GMC ‘State of Medical Education and Practice’ report highlights occupational medicine

Earlier this month the General Medical Council (GMC) published its annual report.  You can read an executive summary of the report on the GMC website.

The report aims to provide a picture of the medical profession in the UK and to identify some of the challenges it faces.  GMC Chief Executive, Niall Dickson, who addressed members at our Autumn conference in September, went out of his way to register concern at diminishing recruitment in occupational medicine.  A greater proportion of specialists in occupational medicine are aged over 50 than in most other specialties.

The BBC was among media outlets to report the concerns raised by the GMC.   It is important that influential funding bodies have recognised the future workforce crisis facing our specialty; our challenge now is to ensure that funding for specialty training is increased and protected.  We are working closely with Health Education England and others so that access to occupational health provision is available to more UK workers in future.
