Early in 2013, the Faculty will be inviting Fellows to consider applying for two important officer positions which will fall vacant in May.
Keith Palmer will be standing down from the post of Academic Dean, and Ian Aston from the post of Director of Training, as their terms of office come to an end.
This is being flagged up now, ahead of formal applications being sought, to give Fellows time to consider whether to apply.
The Academic Dean takes overall responsibility for all areas of academic development within the Faculty, including assessment, training and professional development as well as aspects of revalidation. S/he also takes on the role as Deputy President and deputises for the President when required.
The Director of Training is responsible for all aspects of the conduct of specialty training in occupational medicine.
Both officers are expected to represent the Faculty externally at meetings of relevant groups, for example, meetings with the GMC and attendance at committees of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and also to be available for email and phone contact with Faculty staff and others.
Both the Academic Dean and Director of Training are members of the Executive Committee and, as such, also participate in the running of the wider Faculty. The Academic Dean is also co-opted to the Board. The two officers liaise closely with Faculty staff who carry out the work on a day to day basis.
The time commitment for the Academic Dean is per annum: 8 Executive Committee meetings, 4 Board meetings and one away day. In addition to this, s/he will, as needed, attend other meetings such as the RSA meetings, the Assessment Subcommittee and ad hoc meetings, as well as writing policy and other documents; in total, the job amounts to about one day per week.
The Director of Training’s time commitment is per annum: 8 Executive Committee meetings, one Board meeting, one away day, two Specialty Advisory Subcommittee (which s/he will chair) meetings and two RSA meetings, as well as ad hoc meetings. The post-holder will, during 2013 be involved in advising on the implementation of a new trainee e-portfolio system.
These are honorary posts but reasonable expenses will be paid.
