Health for Health Professionals programme

The Health for Health Professionals programme is designed to offer enhanced competencies for occupational physicians who see doctors as patients.  There are two elements to the training offered by the Faculty:

Health for Health Professionals – Core Competency

Health for Health Professionals – Advanced Skills

The Health for Health Professionals training programme is managed by ‘HHP Champions’ – members with a keen interest in this area who have attended the training.  This group, led by Prof Debbie Cohen OBE, formulate the training programme and help to deliver the core competencies training.


HHP Lead

Prof Debbie Cohen OBE, Wales

Professor Cohen is a Senior Medical Research Fellow and Deputy Director of the Centre for Psychosocial and Disability Research at the University of Cardiff . She is also Director of the Individual Support Programme, providing assessment and remediation for doctors and medical students.

She graduated from the University of London and worked in general practice in Surrey, London, and in South Wales. During this time she was an Occupational Health Physician for Marks and Spencer and then for General Electric in South Wales.

Professor Cohen obtained her MD degree by research in 2008 and is a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, and a Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine.

She is an expert in clinical issues related to health in the workplace and provides advice to Public Health Wales and the Welsh Government relating to clinical fitness to practice and on remediation.

We are also looking at supplementing this work by:

  • Supporting the GMC’s work to educate doctors about how to be a better patient.
  • Considering the potential for the particular skills and awareness needed for occupational physicians treating doctors to be included as part of specialty training in occupational medicine.
  • Investigating the benefits of complementary remote self-learning.
