Occupational medicine in general practice

Fit note update

The Department for Work and Pensions has published information for GPs on computer-completed fit notes.

Good practice articles for GPs

Early in 2012, the Faculty of Occupational Medicine worked with Pulse magazine to commission a series of articles to support GPs in their practice in occupational medicine.

The eight articles, which were published in issues of Pulse during March – June 2012, are all written by experts in their field and intended to be of practical use to GPs in their surgery.  They are reproduced on this website as a booklet* and cover:

  • Occupational asthma
  • Fitness for work after surgery
  • Management of mental health conditions that affect, or are caused by, work
  • Dermatitis
  • Occupational health investigations
  • Work related upper limb disorders
  • Low back pain
  • Careers in occupational health

*A further article, published in March 2013, was written by the Faculty’s Director of Training, Dr Jayne Moore, describing why she chose to pursue a career in occupational medicine.  This article is included within an August 2013 update of the booklet.
